CAROLINA LOCKWOOD
Carolina Lockwood was born in
Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1955, and has been living in Bariloche,
Patagonia since 1974. She has participated in various courses and
seminars on Contemporary Art, including sculpture workshops with
renowned Argentinean sculptor and video artist Ruth Viegener. She
has also taken part in numerous group shows with many of her
Patagonian peers and was selected for a seminar on production and
analysis, organized by Foundation Antorchas.
Her recent works begin in the
remote, sacred spots of Patagonia, Argentina and Canada. Here she
has collected uniquely shaped pieces of found driftwood, which have
been naturally sculpted and shaped over time. She feels that the
spirit of the elements: earth, fire, water, and air, are captured
within each piece of wood. Thus, these driftwood works are
transformed from their origins, but remain carriers of their own
messages from within. These sentinels may be silent, and yet they
speak of humanity, nature’s joy, suffering, fears and desires.
From 1996 to 2003 Carolina has
worked with people with special needs through specialized art and
ceramics programs. She presently gives sculpture and ceramic classes
at her own workshop. She also shows and sells her artwork in her own
shop "Artisteria", in Colonia Suiza, Rio Negro, Patagonia,
Argentina.
“These works begin in remote,
sacred spots, in Patagonia, Argentina and Canada. Multitudes of
driftwood sculpted in time. They carry within them the spirit of the
elements, earth, fire, water, air, ether. Transformed from their
origins but carriers of messages. They are silent yet they speak of
humanity, nature, joy and suffering, fears and desires, solitude and
the masses, of love. They take me to a place of silence, of
observation, understanding and learning. They pose polarities,
opposite emotions on the same line. It is our choice which end of
the line to be on. We can make a difference. Through my work I seek
for peace, mystic, magic and above all love.”
