Jane Coryell, PhD in Art
Education, is an accomplished teacher, set designer and fibre
artist. For over 30 years, she taught English, French, Drama, and
Art in Halton High Schools. Now her time is devoted to theatre and
stitchery. She does commissions and gives lessons in hand
embroidery. To keep new learners in stitches, this doctor even makes
house calls.
Her work ranges from 40 feet
to 4 inches. Since 1978, she has designed sets and/or costumes for
61 productions in Oakville, Waterdown, Guelph, Hamilton, and Kittery
Point, Maine. In 2002, the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts
acknowledged Jane’s contributions to local theatre with the Centre’s
prestigious Appreciation Award. An eight- time winner and six-time
nominee of THEA awards for Best Design in Community Theatre, she
also co-ordinates the painting of her sets.
In 2005, Jane was nominated
for Oakville’s Athena award for her encouragement of people of all
ages to pursue their artistic passions. The nomination acknowledged
the help she has provided for many students and community volunteers
interested in exploring art and discovering their hidden talents, as
well as for attracting others to paint and design stage scenery.
Her large-scale work is
balanced by original hand-stitched embroideries, which she exhibits
with the Oakville Stitchery Guild and in Oakville’s World of Threads
Festivals. They exemplify her interest in narrative and figurative
imagery. Pieces have also been in provincial and national juried
shows – Threadworks ’95 and The Common Thread 1998 and 2000. She
specializes in images based on stories, songs, and rhymes. The hand
embroideries are embellished with a charm or button related to the
image. Jane’s interest in Medieval art also influences her designs.
Her favourite image, I Think I Can, I Think I Can, illustrated the
month of May in Weaving New Rhythms, Diary 2001 (Rubicon
Publishing).
Jane dedicates considerable
time to several Oakville organizations, including three community
theatre groups, the Oakville Stitchery Guild, Oakville’s biennial
fibre arts festivals (World of Threads). She was one of the founding
board members of Music and Art Shared Space (M.A.S.S.) ~ Oakville’s
future community arts centre, a nucleus and a network for local
artists in music, arts, and crafts. She is also a member of the
Oakville Arts Council board, advocating for and building up
community arts. In 2006, Jane was honoured with Oakville’s Community
Spirit Award for volunteerism in the Arts.
