LORRAINE ROY

Lorraine Roy was born in the French village of Pain-Court in Southwestern Ontario. She spent her summers wandering along the Thames River and surrounding countryside, observing plants and wildlife with all their seasonal changes. Later, her strong interest in both the visual arts and the sciences lead to a B.Sc. in Ornamental Horticulture from Guelph University. Eventually, her early fascination with fabric techniques evolved into a full time profession. Lorraine is noted for her original method of collage that treats textiles and threads in a painterly way.

Her visual vocabulary and research are guided by a varied range of sources: spiritual texts, philosophy, mythology, science, nature, literature, and visual art. The form, symbolism and mythology of trees have been of particular interest in recent years, culminating in "Saving Paradise", a solo touring exhibition of wall hangings portraying rare and endangered trees of Ontario. She is also becoming increasingly interested in abstract images, fuelled by the work of her photographer husband, Janusz Wrobel.

Lorraine’s work has been exhibited widely in Canada, the US and abroad and is part of numerous public and private collections, including the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs. She is also the recipient of several professional Arts Grants from the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council. Lorraine now lives in Dundas, Ontario.
