'Tokonoma',
haiku and tanka by James Kirkup, woodcuts by Naoko Matsubara.
A
tokonoma is an alcove in the home where a picture or work of art can
be placed for meditation.
The
book 'Tokonoma' is an editioned piece that presents a collection of
twenty haiku and tanka by James Kirkup Each verse has been printed
on a sheet of Japanese hand-made paper specially made by Masao Seki
and accompanied by a striking woodcut by Naoko Matsubara. The images
have been printed in one, two, or five colours by Alan Flint in
Canada under Naoko Matsubara's supervision. The sheets are housed in
a box constructed to allow one verse at a time to be displayed, much
as one might display a photograph or favourite picture. The
twenty-five sheets (each about 33cm by 26cm) are held in a tray
covered in black cloth with a perspex lid. The back of the tray
allows it to stand so that the top sheet is displayed. A slip case
protects the whole. This hybrid of book and picture means that the
poetry and pictures can be changed with time or whim. Every copy is
signed by the four collaborators. |

Book "Other Goose"
by Barbara KlunderIn this gently
subversive book, artist and designer Barbara Klunder
takes classic nursery rhymes and turns them on their
heads, adding her own quirky twist to familiar
favourites. Rock-a-bye baby laments the loss of her
treetop to logging. Old Mother Hubbard must resort
to a food bank. Jack and Jill discover that their
well water is polluted, and Mary watches her garden
flourish with weeding and fertilizing. Second-hand
smoke, recycling, allergies, logging, pollution, oil
spills, gasoline shortages and crooked politicians
are all treated with Klunderesque whimsy and wit.
Graphically striking, spiky, engaging
black-and-white illustrations drive the point home
-- what are we doing to the planet? Other Goose
is a great family read as well as a gift book for
all ages.
Barbara Wyn Klunder is an eclectic artist gifted
in many genres and media, from designing hand-knit
sweaters, hand-hooked rugs and fonts to illustration
work. She is well known for her commitment to human
rights and environmental causes. She teaches at the
Art Gallery of Ontario and her textile work has been
exhibited at Abbozzo Gallery.
