A Sense of Place
Dan Steeves

When I view the work of Dan Steeves, I am reminded of the observation made by the American photographer Robert Frank that black and white in photography are the colours of hope and despair. The black and white of Dan’s images exist in this evocative space of the human condition, and express this duality. They bring to mind my memories of the human existence in a personal yet universal way. The communities that Dan and I share through our life experience are depicted in a way that makes me consider my own fragility and good fortune.

One strength of any great work of art is the possibility of focusing the universal and personal in a seamless way, and the presence of this condition has always impressed me in Dan’s intaglio prints.
